Cardiff City vs Wrexham:…

The global attention surrounding this clash is unprecedented, a stark contrast to their last league meeting on 22 March 2002, when goals from Scott Young, Peter Thorne and Danny Gabbidon sealed a 3-2 win for the Bluebirds over the Red Dragons.

Back then, just under 16,000 fans filled Ninian Park. This time, nearly twice as many are expected at Cardiff City Stadium, highlighting the excitement for the fixture.

The match will be broadcast worldwide, with strong interest in North America, where Wrexham has become widely known thanks to the Welcome to Wrexham documentary.

Even so, Cardiff head coach Barry-Murphy is unmoved by the spectacle surrounding Wrexham’s Hollywood ownership duo, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

His attention is fixed on meeting the expectations of Cardiff’s supporters and those of the club’s Malaysian owner, Vincent Tan.

He made clear that audiences in North America aren’t his concern.

With respect, he said the focus is on the people of Cardiff—and that the team is always looking to impress their Malaysian owner while playing for the fans.

Wrexham’s rapid rise, however, has been almost impossible to overlook.

Denis Smith—Wrexham manager during that 3-2 defeat in the capital more than 20 years ago—says it’s crucial for north Wales to have a club of Wrexham’s standing.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales Sport, the 78-year-old said he understands the region’s passion for football. He reflected on five successful years that brought trophies and promotion, acknowledged the difficulties—including his time on the board that cost him personally—and praised Wrexham as a great club. The area craves football, he added, and Wales needs a club of Wrexham’s size in the north.
