Michael Carrick has revealed that he is actively involved in planning for next season at Manchester United, even as he awaits clarity on his own future.
Since stepping in as head coach after Ruben Amorim’s departure in January, Carrick has made a notable impact but remains uncertain about his role following the current season.
He has garnered strong support from the players as he works to guide the team back into contention for the Champions League, and he is already contributing to discussions about the future of the squad while waiting on his own situation.
This week, defender Harry Maguire signed a new one-year deal, a decision in which Carrick played a key role alongside chief executive Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox.
“In my current role, there are decisions that need to be made,” he stated.
“From the moment I arrived, I made it clear that I am part of this process, whatever it might entail moving forward,” he added. “I’m focused on improving and enhancing our situation continuously. There are definitely conversations I’m part of regarding various directions.”
“It’s important that I’m here to ensure things get done.”
The United coach also emphasized caution regarding the fitness of defender Lisandro Martínez, stating that he will only reinstate the Argentine if he is fully fit.
Martínez has missed the last five matches due to a calf issue, but he has returned to training and participated in team activities in Ireland this week.
With Harry Maguire suspended, Carrick may be tempted to field Martínez in the upcoming match against Leeds at Old Trafford.

However, Carrick insists that he will not rush Martínez back into action unless he is certain there will be no further injury risk. Should Martínez be unavailable, Carrick could opt for young center-backs Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven in the match against Leeds.
“It’s a decision we’ll make,” Carrick mentioned when discussing Martínez’s fitness. “We won’t let ourselves be pressured. It’s crucial that players are fit; while the next match is important, the broader picture is always the priority.”
“He’s back in training, which is a positive, but we must ensure his readiness before making a final decision.”
Patrick Dorgu has not fully recovered from a hamstring injury and, despite making the trip to Ireland with the team, will not participate against Leeds.
Diogo Dalot is expected to be available for selection after missing out due to illness, while Matthijs de Ligt remained in Manchester for his ongoing recovery from a back injury.
“The reason De Ligt didn’t travel is that he’s not yet back on the field,” Carrick clarified. “Patrick is progressing well, but Matty needs to continue his rehabilitation. There’s no other way around it.”
