Celtic have completed the signing of Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan, whose standout display against Argentina nearly helped Egypt eliminate Lionel Messi’s side in one of this summer’s World Cup thrillers.
The 24-year-old, a left-footer who often operates on the right, has signed a four-year contract with an option for a further season.
Hassan logged only 126 minutes at the World Cup after a registration delay kept the former France youth international out of the group stage, but his profile soared once he finally featured.
He came on as a second-half substitute in Egypt’s round-of-32 shootout victory over Australia, then tormented Argentina before the Pharaohs were controversially denied a landmark win.
The Paris-born forward has spent the past two seasons with Real Oviedo, having also had spells at three other Spanish clubs after leaving boyhood side Chateauroux in 2020.
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has emphasized quality over quantity as he rebuilds a squad that has lost more than a dozen players since last season’s Premiership and Scottish Cup double.
Hassan becomes Celtic’s third summer addition, with a pivotal Champions League play-off against LASK looming next Wednesday.
Denmark striker Kasper Hogh has arrived in a reported £11m move from Bodo/Glimt, while Colombian forward Camilo Duran has joined from Qarabag for an undisclosed fee.
Hassan told club media it is a special moment and a real honour to join Celtic.
He said that once he learned of Celtic’s interest, he was determined to come and be part of the club.
O’Neill said the club had done very well to secure a player of such quality, with several other teams also interested.
He believes Hassan has the ability and experience to excel for Celtic, performing at a high level in both domestic and international football.
O’Neill added that Hassan is excited to be at the club and that supporters will enjoy his energy and attacking intent.
