The hamstring injury sustained by Chelsea and Brazil forward Estêvão is more severe than previously anticipated, according to scans conducted on Monday. This raises concerns about the remainder of his season and his ability to participate in the World Cup, sources informed ESPN Brazil.
Estêvão was visibly upset at halftime after having to leave the match just 16 minutes in due to the injury during Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Manchester United on Sunday. He was in tears following the incident.
This news was initially reported by The Athletic and subsequently confirmed by ESPN sources.
Brazil’s head coach Carlo Ancelotti is set to announce the World Cup roster on May 18, and discussions within the Brazil Football Confederation are considering whether to include the 18-year-old in the squad, with hopes he could be fit for the knockout rounds.
This season, Estêvão has played 36 matches for Chelsea, scoring eight goals and providing three assists. For the Brazilian national team, he has netted five goals in 11 appearances.
Chelsea’s next match is an FA Cup fixture against Leeds on April 26.
Brazil will kick off their World Cup campaign against Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium.
Estêvão has proven to be a promising addition to Chelsea’s squad this season after officially joining from Palmeiras over the summer.
