Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Danny Welbeck, while Jordan Henderson has ended his Brentford contract to clear the way for a move to Stamford Bridge.
Henderson, 36, was contracted until 2027, but Brentford confirmed they had mutually agreed to part ways with the England midfielder.
Welbeck, 35, has accepted a two-year deal and received Brighton’s permission to undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge. A fee has been settled but remains undisclosed. Chelsea aim to finalise the transfer in time for him to join their pre-season tour in Hong Kong after their final Australia fixture against Tottenham on Saturday.
Welbeck would be the oldest signing of the Todd Boehly–Clearlake era—until Henderson’s anticipated arrival—reflecting new head coach Xabi Alonso’s push to add know-how to what has been the Premier League’s youngest squad over the past two seasons. The club’s youth-first strategy has been cited as a reason for inconsistent contention for major honours.
Following last season’s 10th-place finish and a trophyless campaign, co-owner Behdad Eghbali said the recruitment model needed a “tweak.” Since then, Chelsea have moved to reunite 34-year-old Granit Xhaka with Alonso after their title-winning season at Bayer Leverkusen in 2024. They have also secured a six-year agreement for 26-year-old centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, pending an official announcement, while talks over Henderson continue.
Earlier this month, Chelsea completed a club-record £117m deal for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, with the 24-year-old considered relatively seasoned. The club have also added 21-year-old full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
Former Manchester United and Arsenal forward Welbeck has scored 90 goals in 400 top-flight matches and is Brighton’s leading Premier League scorer since joining them on a free from Watford in 2021. His arrival would take Chelsea to six senior strikers, with some expected to be available for loan or sale. Potential departures include Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu. Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha, signed this summer from sister club Strasbourg, could also remain in the squad.
Henderson would further boost the side’s experience and leadership, having been named by Thomas Tuchel in England’s leadership group at this summer’s World Cup. He fractured his arm and wrist celebrating the last-16 win over Mexico after an awkward landing while jumping a pitchside hoarding.
After spells with Ajax and Saudi club Al Ettifaq, Henderson joined Brentford last summer, following a decorated career at Liverpool that brought six major trophies, including the Champions League and Premier League. He made 34 appearances for Brentford as they finished ninth. “I leave Brentford with a lot of gratitude for the opportunity the club gave me and for the support and care shown to me and my family from day one,” Henderson said, adding that returning to the Premier League had been very important to him.
If completed, Henderson will join a midfield group featuring Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Dario Essugo, Romeo Lavia and Valentin Barco, with Barco expected to arrive from Strasbourg subject to confirmation.
