On Wednesday, Arsenal rallied to beat Real Madrid 2-1 with a brace from Alessia Russo. Meanwhile, OL Lyonnes managed a 3-3 draw against Juventus, VfL Wolfsburg triumphed 5-2 over Manchester United, Paris FC defeated Benfica 2-0, and Valerenga and St. Polten ended in a 2-2 draw.

Thursday brought heavyweight matchups, with Barcelona and Chelsea finishing 1-1. Paris Saint-Germain faced continued struggles, losing 3-1 to Bayern Munich. Additionally, Atlético Madrid dominated FC Twente 4-0, while OH Leuven and Roma played to a 1-1 draw.

Our writers, Julien Laurens, Sam Marsden, and Yash Thakur, tackled some pertinent questions arising from the matches.

What insights can we draw from Chelsea’s and Barcelona’s title chances?

Thakur: Chelsea has displayed resilience against Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League, showcasing an impressive performance that limited the Spanish side to just nine shots and one notable chance. Sonia Bompastor’s squad successfully neutralized Barcelona’s attack, particularly in midfield. The Blues remain unbeaten this season, but they will need to convert these solid displays into victories in pursuit of their first European title.

Although Barcelona showed some vulnerabilities in recent performances and appeared less dominant, they still remain a top contender in the competition. Their loss in depth has limited their gameplan, making them susceptible to the aggressive marking tactics employed by both Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Marsden: Don’t read too much into Thursday’s draw at Stamford Bridge. Historically, Chelsea might find solace in this result compared to Barcelona, who had the clearer opportunities to win late in the game. This match underscored Barcelona’s need for squad depth; they are still the best team when fully fit, but injuries have highlighted their fragility.

Barcelona coach Pere Romeu’s tactical decisions demonstrate the impact of injuries on squad balance and decision-making during games. Minor setbacks can disrupt their rhythm, implying that they must maintain their core players to remain competitive.

Laurens: Chelsea’s draw could be seen as a mild triumph since they managed to exhibit superior performance against one of the top teams in the competition. Their strategic discipline proved effective as they gave up few chances to Barcelona. On a different night, Chelsea might have come away with a win, showcasing crucial learnings for Bompastor’s squad.

Conversely, Barcelona showed signs of decline as they faced challenges adapting to the competitive landscape. Their previous supremacy has waned, and recent performances against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Leuven illustrate the need for continued vigilance.

What steps must Real Madrid take to advance further?

Thakur: Last season, Real Madrid achieved impressive back-to-back victories over Arsenal, but this time around, they’ve succumbed to losses against both sides despite some promising performances under new coach Pau Quesada. Importantly, they’ve secured a win against Paris Saint-Germain after several unsuccessful attempts.

The current squad has been bolstered with key summer signings that improve its overall quality. However, to elevate their game further, the team needs to acquire a clinical striker and solidify midfield control. The upcoming season may require comprehensive planning to build on their current trajectory.

Marsden: Madrid has faced a week filled with missed opportunities. The team struggled to convert chances against both Barcelona and Arsenal, leaving them with a sense of unfulfilled potential. Though they have made strides in their competitiveness as one of Spain’s top teams, the next challenge is a tougher one, requiring consistent execution in critical moments.

With evident improvements under Coach Quesada, they must focus on becoming more effective in both penalty areas. At present, they fall slightly short of the elite clubs’ standards, indicating a critical need for further squad investment.

Laurens: During the match against Arsenal, it was apparent that Real Madrid was in control for a significant part of the first half. Their performance reflects their resilience, akin to the game against Barcelona last week, where they created multiple scoring opportunities but failed to convert. To progress, they must address their scoring efficiency and maintain calm under pressure.

What are the vulnerabilities of OL Lyonnes, and what could be their implications?

Thakur: After a summer of significant recruitment, OL Lyonnes was expected to excel, although the focus on attacking signings raised concerns about their midfield and defensive balance. Their recent challenges against Juventus exemplify these weaknesses.

Despite their initial struggles, the second half showcased their potential. Lyonnes coach Jonatan Giráldez must refine the midfield balance to maximize the talents available in the squad.

Laurens: While Lyonnes’ draw with Juventus raised eyebrows, it doesn’t signal a significant concern. Their first-half deficit stemmed from Juventus’s clinical finishing, whereas Lyon showed promise after adjustments were made at halftime. Implementing the right tactical combinations can restore their confidence moving forward. They currently are my favorites to win the tournament, given their standing atop the table alongside Barcelona.

Marsden: I concur with Jules; Lyonnes can attribute this result to a flukish performance. They managed to dominate much of the second half and have proven their ability to reverse course quickly. Upcoming matches will require Lyonnes to stay alert, especially considering the competitive landscape where teams such as Arsenal, Wolfsburg, and Chelsea have demonstrated their capabilities.

What’s gone awry for PSG, and is an early exit imminent?

Thakur: Paris Saint-Germain’s squad has noticeably declined in quality over recent years. The tactical style has shifted under new manager Paulo César, leading to defensive frailties evident in both domestic and European competitions.

With no points accrued thus far in the UWCL’s new format, PSG has conceded 11 goals while only scoring three. As they prepare for upcoming matches against OH Leuven and Benfica, there may be a glimmer of hope for recovery. However, their fate now lies outside their control after last season’s earlier exit served as an ominous warning.

Laurens: Paris is undergoing a significant transition, moving away from high-profile signings towards nurturing local talent. Despite facing formidable opponents early on, there have been moments of near success. However, subsequent performances need to translate more effectively into results. Upcoming fixtures are crucial for PSG, but I fear they may fall short in accumulating enough points to advance.

Marsden: PSG’s current struggles, combined with a challenging fixture list, highlight the need for introspection within the club. Historically dominant in the Champions League, their status as the only team without a point is unacceptable. With emerging teams like Paris FC posing a threat, PSG faces significant challenges in this campaign. The bright side is that their situation can’t worsen from here.

Which smaller teams have stood out, and what are their prospects for qualification?

Thakur: OH Leuven has been a standout team this season. They have held their ground against every opponent, even showing decent form in a 3-0 loss to Barcelona. Their performances have rivaled those of mid-tier teams like Roma and Paris FC.

OH Leuven and Valerenga are both in contention for playoff positions. Valerenga currently seems better positioned, but their points dropped against St. Polten could prove pivotal. Meanwhile, OH Leuven faces tough challenges against PSG and Arsenal that will test their resolve. However, they could spring a surprise based on their recent performances.

Laurens: I share Yash’s sentiments about Leuven but will highlight Valerenga, who trails closely behind. They were unfortunate to lose to Wolfsburg in the dying moments and performed well in their away victory against Roma. Missing out on points against St. Polten was a big loss, as they stand poised to seize their chance against Paris FC at home next month. A win there could significantly boost their chances of advancing.

Marsden: Absolutely, all eyes are on Leuven. They showcased resilience even in a narrow defeat to Barcelona and have only lost one of their four matches. Their path to advancement lies in strong performances against either PSG or Arsenal, both of which are crucial matches ahead. While PSG is struggling, overcoming them will still prove to be challenging.

Additionally, while some may contest their classification as smaller teams, both Real Madrid and Manchester United have shown significant improvements. With both clubs currently among the top seven, they are on course for potential qualification.
