Javier Aguirre has revealed his provisional 55-man squad for the World Cup, leaving out noteworthy players such as Mexico’s Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano and Rodrigo Huescas.
At 30, Lozano has participated in the last two World Cups, but his limited playing time at San Diego FC, coupled with disciplinary issues, has resulted in his exclusion from the roster.
Meanwhile, 22-year-old Huescas continues to recover from a torn ACL he suffered last October while playing for Copenhagen FC.
Mexico’s captain Edson Álvarez, who had ankle surgery in February after sustaining an injury whilst on loan at Fenerbahce from West Ham, has made the squad.
Additionally, players returning from injury include Dynamo Moscow’s Luis Chávez, Anderlecht’s César Huerta, and Celtic’s Julián Araujo.
Aguirre’s roster features 12 players from the Liga MX who did not participate in the playoffs. Additionally, several uncapped players are included, such as Álex Padilla, a goalkeeper from LaLiga club Athletic Club.

Red Bull New York winger Jorge Ruvalcaba, who received his first cap for Mexico in November, is also included in the squad.
Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, set to turn 41 during the World Cup, is anticipated to be called up for his sixth tournament.
The final 26-man squad for the World Cup will be announced on June 1.
As co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, Mexico is scheduled to open the tournament against South Africa on June 11 in Mexico City.
The team will also compete against the Czech Republic and South Korea in Group A.
