Pep Guardiola, the coach of Manchester City, expressed his “concerns” following several injuries to defenders during the team’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
During the second half, both Josko Gvardiol and Rúben Dias had to leave the pitch due to injury just as Enzo Fernández scored a last-minute equaliser at the Etihad Stadium.
Nico O’Reilly was also seen clutching his hamstring towards the end of the match.
Guardiola is already without John Stones, who has only featured in one league match since August, as well as Nathan Aké, who has also faced fitness issues.
“Of course I have concerns,” Guardiola stated. “Have you seen the bench today? We had four academy players, and now we’ll likely have more. Our player pool is thin.”
After the exits of Gvardiol and Dias, City’s patched-up defense conceded Chelsea’s equaliser in the 94th minute.
This marks the second consecutive match in which Guardiola’s side has dropped points, leaving them six behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League standings.
“We have to stay strong and we’ll find a way through this. The spirit is still there and will remain.”
Post-match, Guardiola expressed particular concern for Gvardiol, who required help from Reece James and a physician as he struggled to leave the field.
“We’ll assess the situation tomorrow [Monday], but it doesn’t seem promising,” Guardiola remarked. “Both him and Ruben – we will see what unfolds. I haven’t discussed specifics with the doctor, but if Ruben is out, it’s because he felt something serious.”
