Citys Guardiola…

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has criticized referees for their inconsistent treatment of star striker Erling Haaland, claiming he is unfairly penalized for fouls against defenders.

The prolific forward was at the center of a contentious incident during Manchester City’s Carabao Cup semifinal against Newcastle on Tuesday, which saw an Antoine Semenyo goal disallowed after a lengthy VAR review.

Haaland, positioned offside, was ruled to have interfered with play, leading to a five-and-a-half minute delay.

Guardiola expressed his dissatisfaction with the ruling, arguing that Haaland is being uniquely targeted in officiating decisions.

“He’s the only striker I’ve seen who commits more fouls than he receives,” Guardiola stated. “It’s a remarkable trait. He is the only striker in my experience who seems to foul defenders more than they foul him. It’s quite extraordinary.”

“At the start of the season, referees indicated it would be the other way around. However, the reality is quite different.”

He continued, “Look at what happens in the penalty areas, not just with our team. When there’s pushing and holding going on? I really don’t understand why there’s never a foul called. Every time Erling touches an opponent, it’s deemed a foul against him.”

This season, Haaland has netted 29 goals in 26 matches for City, although he has only scored once—in a penalty—in the last six games.

Guardiola acknowledged that the demanding schedule might be taking a toll on Haaland, but he is confident the Norwegian will regain his form.

“We’re lucky to have Erling with us for the remainder of the season,” Guardiola remarked. “His presence has been vital for us and has significantly contributed to our current standing.”

“He brings so much to the team and keeps improving in various aspects.”

“The fixture list is relentless, and this is a particularly grueling time with matches every few days, leading to less recovery time amidst travel and challenging opponents.”

“It’s tough, but I believe he will bounce back.”

Manchester City returns to Premier League action on Saturday, making a short trip to face rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.
