Pep Guardiola has reiterated his criticism of referees despite facing backlash for his remarks about debut referee Farai Hallam. He emphasized that it’s his responsibility to defend the interests of Manchester City.
Guardiola expressed his frustration after Hallam, officiating his first Premier League match, ignored VAR advice and did not award City a penalty during the 2-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
His remark that “now everyone will know him [Hallam]” has received criticism.
This is not the first time Guardiola has criticized referees, as he voiced his displeasure after City’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semifinal at St James’ Park, where Antoine Semenyo‘s goal was disallowed by VAR.
Guardiola was also frustrated by Diogo Dalot escaping a red card during the loss to Manchester United. He has consistently pointed out crucial decisions he believes have negatively affected his team, including the Premier League defeat to Newcastle in November and last season’s FA Cup final loss to Crystal Palace.
“If he [Hallam] feels offended, I’m truly sorry,” Guardiola stated. “Referees defend one another, which is completely understandable. But I must defend my club. How many times did I criticize the referees last season, which was my worst in a decade? How many times? What comments did I make against referees after the United game? Please tell me.
“I have been incredibly respectful towards referees in my nine or ten years, regardless of the outcomes, never making negative comments.
“I understand that they support each other, and pundits defend them as well. However, I have a responsibility to defend my players and my club. That’s what I owe them—my club and my supporters—regarding what transpired.”
Looking ahead, City will face Galatasaray at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, aiming for a spot in the top eight of the Champions League.

The team is preparing boosted by Arsenal‘s loss to Manchester United on Sunday.
This has narrowed the gap at the top of the Premier League table to just four points, though Guardiola has cautioned his players against fixating on the situation at the Emirates.
“My advice to them is to concentrate on their own duties,” Guardiola advised. “If we are content and optimistic simply because our rivals drop points, it will not serve us well. We must focus on improving our own game to secure victories.
“Now, it’s a different competition, and we’re already qualified, which is good. However, it is crucial for us to aim for a top-eight finish.”
