As he prepares for Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad, Atlético Madrid star Antoine Griezmann reflects on the emotional moments leading to his departure from the club that launched his LaLiga career.
The all-time top scorer for Atlético is set to make his move to Orlando City after the season concludes.
“I’m taking everything in and truly enjoying these last moments,” Griezmann stated. “I’m excited, eager, and happy. I’m not focused on whether this will be my last final with Atleti; what matters is that this is an important match, a final that not many players get to experience.”
Leading Atlético in the Copa del Rey this season with five goals, Griezmann began his career in the Real Sociedad academy before transferring to Atlético in 2014.
“I’m trying to keep my emotions in check about facing Real Sociedad because I want to stay focused for the match,” Griezmann shared. “But I owe them a lot. They opened doors for me that were closed in France.”
Entering the final on a positive note after knocking out Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals, Atlético’s coach Diego Simeone emphasized that the team has regained both mental and physical strength, with their sights set on capturing their first trophy in five years.
“Winning the Champions League has put us in a wonderful position, which can be uplifting, but now we need to stay grounded,” Simeone remarked. “Staying on solid ground is crucial, and we understand the challenges that lie ahead.”
Real Sociedad is aiming for a mild upset under coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, who has revitalized the team since taking over mid-season.
“Who would have thought from our first discussion that we would end up playing in a final just months later?” Matarazzo stated.
“We don’t set limits for ourselves. Every day is an opportunity to grow and improve, and that has been our approach from the start.”
