Haji Wright netted the decisive goal for the second time in just three days, helping league leaders Coventry secure a 2-1 victory over Millwall at the CBS Arena.
Wright’s 85th-minute strike against Leicester in the M69 Derby on Saturday marked his return to scoring, bringing his season tally to 10 goals as Coventry celebrated back-to-back wins.
On-loan winger from Crystal Palace, Romain Esse, opened the scoring for Coventry against his former club, but Mihailo Ivanovic responded with a brilliant equalizer for Millwall before the half-hour mark.
Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, increased their advantage over third-place Ipswich to nine points, as Ipswich climbed to second after overtaking Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship.
While Coventry dominated early possession, Millwall always posed a threat on the counter-attack.
Following a corner, Ivanovic broke down the left flank and created a two-on-one opportunity, but his cross to Thierno Ballo was just out of reach.
From a corner, Carl Rushworth made a crucial save, diving low to his left as Tristan Crama redirected Femi Azeez’s cross towards the goal.
Wright, recalled to the starting lineup due to his recent performance, played a key role in the 11th-minute opener. He connected with Ephron Mason-Clark’s cross at the back post, but his header was saved by Max Crocombe. Esse was quick to follow up, scoring from close range.
Millwall nearly leveled the score when Jay Dasilva mismanaged a ball over the top, granting Azeez a chance, but he missed the target.
Ivanovic’s equalizer was spectacular, as he found space between two Coventry defenders to skillfully hook Azeez’s inswinging cross into the far corner.
Coventry continued to threaten early in the second half, with Wright striking the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside against Esse.
Josh Eccles later delivered a cross to Esse, who unfortunately couldn’t direct it towards goal.
Rushworth, also on loan from Brighton, made another crucial save when Ivanovic launched a counter-attack, aiming for the far corner, but Rushworth reacted quickly. Dasilva cleared the follow-up off the line.
When Matt Grimes lost the ball near his penalty area, Millwall seized the opportunity again, but Zak Sturge’s shot went wide.
With 20 minutes remaining, Lampard made a triple substitution, bringing on Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Brandon Thomas-Asante, and Victor Torp.
The substitutes combined effectively, with Thomas-Asante setting up Wright for Coventry’s second goal. Sakamoto delivered a cross from the right, and after Wright received the ball, his left-footed strike proved too powerful for Crocombe.
