Matheus Cunha expressed his belief that Michael Carrick should remain as the head coach of Manchester United, crediting him with bringing back some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary spirit to Old Trafford.
The esteemed former midfielder was appointed to bring stability to the team and guide them back to Champions League qualification after Ruben Amorim’s contentious departure in January.
Despite the daunting task, Carrick has surpassed expectations, leading the team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over fierce rivals Liverpool, securing a spot in Europe’s premier competition with three matches left in the season.
Ferguson was unable to attend the match, having been hospitalized as a precaution after feeling unwell, but Cunha recognized the lasting influence of the legendary manager during a passionate performance orchestrated by Carrick, one of his former players.

When asked if he would like Carrick to continue as head coach next season, Sunday’s first scorer stated, “Yes, absolutely, I think we should acknowledge that.”
“While it’s not my decision to make, he has instilled a tremendous amount of confidence in the team. I’ve been on the bench with him, and his methods of teaching are remarkable.
“He carries that special touch reminiscent of Ferguson’s era, which he has shared with us and taught us how to embody.” Cunha added, “It’s a pleasure to be part of what he’s achieved, and I truly believe he deserves the role.”
Carrick’s connections to United facilitated his appointment for the rest of the season, as the club sought a manager familiar with its core values, allowing director of football Jason Wilcox the necessary time to search for a long-term successor to Amorim.
Carrick has shown he could indeed be that successor, with rejuvenated matchwinner Kobbie Mainoo stating that players would “go to war” for their head coach after securing Champions League qualification on Sunday.
Cunha remarked, “Playing for this club is one of my greatest privileges, and we recognize that qualifying for the Champions League is essential.”
“Champions League football is a different experience without this club, just as this club is transformed when absent from the Champions League. It’s an honor to be involved in this journey, especially after the uncertainty surrounding the club’s revival.”
Cunha acknowledged that the team could not afford to become complacent and emphasized the need to pursue the type of titles that were so plentiful during Carrick’s time playing under Ferguson.
While Casemiro will not be part of that future, with his contract expiring this summer, Cunha humorously shared his ongoing efforts to convince him to stay.

“Having him in the squad is a privilege,” he expressed. “We’ll miss him dearly. The situation with his contract remains unclear, but naturally, we all hope for a bit more!”
Cunha chuckled and concluded, “Of course, it’s more complicated than we discussed, but you never know. Let’s see what happens!”
