On Tuesday, Czech authorities arrested multiple individuals in connection with a match-fixing scandal.
David Trunda, the head of the Czech Football Association, revealed that the investigation began several years ago when the association informed police of its suspicions regarding bribery and match manipulation, though he did not provide further details. Reports indicate that the incidents occurred within the top four professional leagues, as well as possibly within youth competitions.
A total of 47 individuals are under consideration for disciplinary action, according to Trunda.
“We are committed to eradicating the influence of the betting mafia from Czech sports,” he stated.
State prosecutors confirmed the arrests and reported that organized crime unit officers executed raids throughout the nation.
This scandal comes just two days before the crucial final stage of FIFA World Cup qualifying.
The Czech national team, currently in the World Cup playoffs, is set to face Ireland in Prague on Thursday. The winner will host either Denmark or North Macedonia for a chance to secure a spot in the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Czech Republic last qualified for the World Cup in 2006.
