Diogo Dalot labeled Bruno Fernandes’ injury as a “huge” setback while Manchester United awaits news on the extent of their captain’s injury.
The 31-year-old has been a standout player, starting every Premier League match this season, netting five goals and assisting seven.
However, manager Ruben Amorim is concerned that Fernandes may be sidelined for “an extended period” due to a soft tissue injury, which prompted his substitution at halftime during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
“It’s a big loss,” Dalot told Sky Sports. “We don’t know the full extent of it, but knowing how tough he is, it’s concerning.”
After taking over as captain from Fernandes, Dalot added in an interview with MUTV: “It was disappointing to see Bruno leave the field. We worked hard to adapt and create opportunities in the game.”
“We generated enough chances to score more, and let’s remain hopeful that his injury isn’t serious, so we can have him back for future matches.”
While the situation remains uncertain, Amorim has already confirmed that Fernandes will miss the upcoming Boxing Day match against Newcastle.
The natural substitute, Kobbie Mainoo, is also likely to be unavailable due to a calf injury suffered during training on Saturday, leaving United potentially short-handed with seven first-team players out for their next match.
Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Noussair Mazraoui are participating in the Africa Cup of Nations, while Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire have been absent from recent matches, prompting Amorim to turn to young talent from the academy.
Jack Fletcher, the son of former United player Darren, and Shea Lacey made their senior debuts at Villa Park, with more academy players eager to make an impact.

“This is a pivotal moment,” Dalot emphasized. “With so many players sidelined, this is the chance for those who haven’t had many opportunities to step up and demonstrate their worth.”
“I’m thrilled they could make their debuts, and I hope they’ll be available for future matches to contribute as well.”
As Christmas approaches, United sits seventh in the Premier League, while Villa, the recent victors, stands third, just three points shy of leaders Arsenal, having secured a 10th consecutive victory across all contests.
Morgan Rogers shone on Sunday, adding another pair of goals to his impressive scoreline following last weekend’s brace against West Ham, leading Unai Emery’s team to triumph.
“I feel like I’m playing the best football of my career,” the thriving England international shared with VillaTV. “My confidence is at its highest, and that reflects the team’s confidence as well.”
“Individual performances naturally improve when the team is thriving collectively. We’re all believing in each other, and the manager is confident in us, allowing us to approach every game with the belief that we can win.”
