Former Atlético Madrid striker David Villa has joined the club’s revamped board of directors following the completion of Apollo Sports Capital’s majority acquisition on Thursday.
The acquisition, which was initially announced last November, has now been finalized, making Apollo Sports Capital the predominant shareholder of the LaLiga club.

Enrique Cerezo and Miguel Angel Gil will continue as chairman and chief executive, respectively, with Villa now serving as an advisor on the board.
Villa was a key member of the Atlético squad that claimed the LaLiga title and reached the Champions League final in the 2013-14 season. He also holds the record as Spain’s all-time leading scorer and has played for clubs like Barcelona and MLS team New York City FC.
“I’m thrilled to return to the club in a new capacity, with the same passion to help make Atlético de Madrid even greater each season,” he expressed in a statement on the club’s website.
“The club has undergone remarkable growth in recent times, and I’m eager to contribute to our continued success. I’m very thankful for being considered for this role.”
Cerezo also welcomed Villa back, stating, “This has always been your home, David. We’re excited to have you take on this challenge, and I have no doubt that your extensive experience will help us strengthen Atlético de Madrid further.”
The acquisition deal includes up to €100 million ($115 million) in capital investment intended for player signings and facility improvements.
Atlético indicated that the €100 million will primarily fund its ambitious “Sport City” project adjacent to the Metropolitano Stadium, as well as enhancements to the club’s football teams.
Apollo Sports Capital previously became minority investors in Championship club Wrexham last December.
Gil stated on apollo.com: “We are proud to officially welcome Apollo Sports Capital to Atlético de Madrid as a dedicated, long-term partner that will enhance our legacy on and off the pitch for our fans, players, coaches, staff, and community.”
