Frenkie de Jong has signed a new deal with Barcelona, extending his contract with the club until 2029.
The midfielder’s previous contract was set to end next summer, which would have allowed him to entertain offers from other teams starting January had he not agreed to the new terms.
Barcelona had been in negotiations with De Jong for several months regarding an extension, although the talks took longer than expected as the Dutch international switched agents earlier this year.
The new contract also benefits Barça financially, as sources indicate that the 28-year-old’s base salary has been lowered compared to his past agreement with the club.
De Jong’s prior agreement with Barça was signed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when he was among the four players who opted to defer salary payments.
This arrangement initially reduced his salary during the pandemic but resulted in an increase as the contract moved toward its expiration in 2026.
This financial strain led Barça to attempt to transfer him to Manchester United in 2022. However, De Jong has consistently expressed his intent to remain in Spain, even amidst occasional tensions with the club’s board.

Having joined Barcelona from Ajax for €75 million ($86.86 million) in 2019, De Jong is now in his seventh season with the club, where he has made over 250 appearances under five different managers.
Throughout his tenure, he has captured six trophies, including two LaLiga titles.
De Jong has matured from a young talent into a central figure and veteran of the team, with his partnership in midfield with Pedri being instrumental to Hansi Flick’s Barça squad.
