Roberto De Zerbi and Marseille have mutually agreed to part ways following a string of disappointing defeats, according to sources from ESPN.
An interim coach will take over for the upcoming league match against Strasbourg this weekend in Ligue 1.
Following weeks of mounting pressure, tensions with players, and dismal results — including a 3-0 loss to Club Brugge>, which resulted in their elimination from the Champions League, and a 5-0 defeat to rivals Paris Saint-Germain last Sunday, it became clear that De Zerbi’s position was no longer tenable.
On Tuesday, the club’s president, Pablo Longoria, along with sporting director Mehdi Benatia and De Zerbi, held discussions with several players. It became apparent that the relationship between the manager and the team had deteriorated significantly.
The decision was made that to salvage the remainder of the season, it was best for De Zerbi to leave immediately.
American owner Frank McCourt is expected to confirm De Zerbi’s departure on Wednesday.
De Zerbi joined Marseille in the summer of 2024. After a successful initial season, finishing second in Ligue 1 behind PSG and securing a Champions League return, his second season has been far more challenging.
Currently, Marseille is positioned fourth in the Ligue 1 standings, trailing leaders PSG by 12 points and second-placed Lens by 10 points amid their recent poor form.
