Bosnia and Herzegovina captain Edin Dzeko, 40, has agreed a one-year contract extension with Schalke.
Dzeko arrived on a free transfer from Fiorentina in January 2026 and played a key role in Schalke’s return to the Bundesliga. He said earning promotion was one of the standout moments of his career and that he remains motivated to help the team in the top flight.
He scored six goals in 11 Bundesliga 2 appearances and captained his country at the 2026 World Cup. Dzeko last featured in the Bundesliga in 2010-11 with Wolfsburg before a £27m move to Manchester City.
Klaus Fichtel holds the record as the oldest player to appear in a Bundesliga match at 43 years and 184 days, while Claudio Pizarro is the league’s oldest goalscorer at 40 years and 227 days. Schalke’s director of football, Youri Mulder, said recent talks showed Dzeko’s hunger is undiminished and that the club believes he can contribute in the Bundesliga as well.
