Emery Laughs Off Shove on…

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery brushed off a sideline incident with Youri Tielemans, which occurred after he substituted the midfielder late in the team’s Europa League victory against Fenerbahce on Thursday.

The Belgium international was taken off in the second minute of stoppage time as Villa secured a 1-0 win in Istanbul, advancing directly to the Europa League’s last 16.

Following Tielemans’ exit, Emery did not shake his hand and even gave him a shove as he returned to the bench.

When asked by TNT Sports about the altercation, Emery downplayed it, jokingly stating, “He’s my son. He’s my son.”

It was a generally positive evening for Villa, highlighted by Jadon Sancho scoring his inaugural goal for the club, sealing victory for Emery’s undermanned squad.

Sancho, who joined Villa on a season-long loan from Manchester United in September, found the net in the 25th minute after connecting with a deflected cross from Matty Cash.

Emery faced challenges with a number of injured players, including captain John McGinn and defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

Marco Bizot made several critical second-half saves to maintain the lead, and after Morgan Rogers had a goal disallowed, VAR denied a potential equalizer from Kemer Akturkoglu, securing the three points for Villa.

“The most significant aspect today was how we competed and the enjoyment we found in playing our style,” Emery remarked.

“We executed the compactness they demanded from us, and of course, winning the match and scoring goals was key. We had chances to secure a second goal; we missed them, but we’re pleased with the feeling from Sunday.”

“We must now focus on our next match against Newcastle on Sunday. The Europa League is vital for us, and qualifying for the top eight is our current priority.”

“We are building the team under challenging circumstances, but next week will mark the end of the transfer window. We hope to finalize everything needed to enhance our squad for the upcoming months and the competitions ahead.”

Tyrone Mings made his comeback after a thigh injury sidelined him since November, contributing to Villa’s clean sheet, and Emery commended his captain post-match.

“He’s an intelligent player, and we needed him today,” Emery added. “After two months away from the pitch, his return was essential, and he showed great commitment in his performance.”
