Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez says he is weighing up whether to retire from international football after Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final.
The 33-year-old has 67 caps, featured in every minute of Argentina’s eight matches at the tournament, kept two clean sheets and conceded eight goals.
A World Cup winner in 2022, he also took home the Golden Glove as the tournament’s top goalkeeper that year.
“I dreamed we’d win it again, bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more,” Martinez wrote on Instagram. “The pain is hard to put into words. There’s a lot to think about — how to move forward, and whether it’s time to step aside. I’m sorry. I gave everything for my country and my teammates.”
Martinez won the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world’s best goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or, in both 2023 and 2024.
He has played for Aston Villa since 2020 and is under contract until 2029, though he has been linked with a summer move to Juventus.
