Former England captain Alan Shearer told BBC Sport after the win: “There were far too many gaps in the back four, and when we did allow chances, they scored with the first and should have with the Yoane Wissa one.”
“Switching Declan Rice to right-back worked because he pushed on and helped create the equaliser, so Tuchel has a decision to make.”
“Before the game I’d have been reluctant, but he can bring a bit of quality we’ve lacked with the players we’ve used so far.”
Even so, Rice offers too much in midfield for right-back to be a serious option. If he ends up there again, it would be Tuchel effectively admitting he built his squad badly.
Asked if Rice should play right-back, ex-England defender Micah Richards said: “No, I wouldn’t. He gives you too much in central midfield. With the Mexico game at altitude, you need his energy in the middle.”
“I’d go with Ezri Konsa at right-back and partner John Stones with Marc Guehi. That’s a better balance for the team.”
Stones has been left out after starting the win over Croatia. His experience could be vital in the Azteca cauldron, especially after Konsa and Guehi switched off for Brian Cipenga’s goal.
Former England captain Wayne Rooney added: “For me, there are major concerns. In particular, when England lose the ball they’re far too open.”
“Against a stronger team, we’ll be in big trouble if that isn’t fixed. We’re far too open in midfield.”
Add in the constant chopping and changing on the flanks, and it all points to Tuchel still having serious doubts over his preferred starting XI.
