German team VfL Wolfsburg announced that Danish star Christian Eriksen will begin an individualized rehabilitation program in Denmark following his recent on-field collapse last month.
In a brief statement on Thursday, Wolfsburg expressed their ongoing communication with Eriksen and the medical professionals managing his recovery, stating, “We continue to wish Christian all the very best with his rehabilitation.”
The 34-year-old Eriksen collapsed after grasping his chest during a friendly match for Denmark against Ukraine in Odense, Denmark, on June 7.
This incident evoked memories of his cardiac arrest during the European Championship five years prior, as players formed a protective circle around him while he received immediate medical care.
Fortunately, he was able to walk off the pitch unaided and was transported to the hospital for further testing.
Following the incident, Eriksen, who has an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to help manage his heart condition post-cardiac arrest in 2021, provided an update the following day, reassuring fans that he was “doing well” and back home with his family.
“As you might imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has significantly affected both me and my family, but I want to clarify that this situation was different from what occurred in 2021,” Eriksen stated.
Eriksen signed a contract with Wolfsburg for the current season last September, having joined the club on a two-year deal as a free agent.
However, he couldn’t prevent the team’s relegation from the Bundesliga.
In his final match for Wolfsburg, Eriksen served as captain during the playoff loss to Paderborn.
