Jimmy Rimmer, the European Cup-winning goalkeeper who played for Aston Villa and Manchester United, has died aged 78.
The Southport-born keeper was a substitute when United beat Benfica to claim the 1968 European Cup.
He started Aston Villa’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final but was replaced by Nigel Spink after nine minutes due to a neck injury.
Rimmer featured in every match of Villa’s run to that final, as well as throughout their 1980-81 league title-winning season.
He made 229 league appearances for Villa and also played for Swansea City and Arsenal, winning Arsenal’s Player of the Season award in 1974-75.
Rimmer earned one England cap in a 1976 friendly against Italy.
Aston Villa and Manchester United said they were deeply saddened by his passing, with Arsenal also paying tribute.
Former United teammate and fellow goalkeeper Alex Stepney shared his condolences on social media, sending love to Rimmer’s family.
