Ex-USWNT Coach Sundhage…

BERN, Switzerland — Renowned soccer coach Pia Sundhage will not have the opportunity to guide Switzerland at the 2027 Women’s World Cup, despite her impressive performance at the recent European Championship.

On Monday, Sundhage expressed her surprise at the Swiss Football Association’s decision not to extend her contract, which is set to expire in December.

A two-time Olympic champion and 2011 World Cup finalist while coaching the United States, Sundhage successfully led the Swiss team to the quarterfinals of Euro 2025 in July, a significant achievement for a team that had never previously advanced to the knockout stage.

“I would have loved to continue this journey,” stated the 65-year-old Sundhage in a statement released by the Swiss FA. “I am surprised by the federation’s decision, but I respect it.”

Last month, ahead of friendlies against Canada and Scotland, Sundhage indicated she was interested in renewing her contract, contingent upon having a full-time assistant coach.

The Swiss FA communicated their decision to Sundhage during an in-person meeting in Stockholm in her home country of Sweden. Federation president Peter Knäbel thanked Sundhage for her leadership during what he described as an “unforgettable” Euro tournament.

Looking ahead, Switzerland plans to implement structural changes within women’s soccer, appointing Johan Djourou as the technical director for national teams. The former Arsenal defender previously collaborated with Sundhage as the sporting coordinator for the squad this year.
