Flamengo has decided to part ways with Filipe Luís, marking the end of a notable chapter in the club’s history.
This announcement came shortly after Monday’s emphatic 8-0 victory against Madureira, which secured Flamengo’s place in the Carioca Championship final with an aggregate score of 11-0.
However, the season has proven disastrous for the Rio de Janeiro side, as they are experiencing their worst start to a campaign in a decade.
The club suffered a defeat in the Brazilian Super Cup against Corinthians and was eliminated by Argentina’s Lanús in the South American Recopa. They currently sit in 11th place in Brazil’s Serie A, having earned just four points from their first three matches.
“Clube de Regatas do Flamengo announces that Filipe Luís will no longer lead the professional team as of this Tuesday,” the club’s statement indicated.
Additionally, the team confirmed that assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares would also be departing.
“Flamengo extends its gratitude to former player and coach Filipe Luís for all that he accomplished and shared during this journey. We wish him success and the best in his future endeavors,” the statement concluded.
The former Chelsea left-back joined Flamengo as a player in 2019, contributing to the club’s success with 10 trophies, including two Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores, before transitioning to coaching in 2024.
During his tenure, he achieved 64 wins in 101 matches with only 15 losses.

At 40 years old, Filipe Luís had piqued the interest of European clubs following his success with Flamengo, having led them to prestigious titles such as the Brazilian Serie A, Copa Libertadores, Campeonato Carioca, and Brazil Supercopa in 2025.
In December, he signed a two-year contract extension with the club. Reports indicate that Flamengo is in discussions with Portuguese manager Leonardo Jardim, who has been without a club since departing from Cruzeiro in December.
