Finalissima: Messi Faces…

On March 27, Spain will face off against Argentina in the Finalissima, marking the first encounter between Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi.

The match, which will feature the European champions against the South American champions, is set to take place at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, the venue where Argentina secured their World Cup victory in 2022.

This will be the fourth edition of the Finalissima and just the second time the trophy is contested this century.

Current world champions Argentina hold the title after defeating Italy 3-0 at Wembley in 2022.

The inaugural competition, known as the Artemio Franchi Cup, was won by France in 1985 against Uruguay, while Argentina won the trophy with a penalty shootout against Denmark in 1993.

The upcoming match will see Barcelona prodigy Yamal go head-to-head with Inter Miami’s Messi, marking an exciting milestone in his budding career.

At just 18 years old, Yamal has drawn comparisons to the 38-year-old Messi, due to their similar paths at Barça, their left-footed play, and matching No. 10 jerseys.

Yamal has downplayed these comparisons, emphasizing his desire to forge his own path rather than mimic Messi’s legacy. “I respect him for what he is to football, and should we ever meet on the pitch, there will be mutual respect,” Yamal remarked last month.

“We both know I don’t want to be Messi, and he understands I am on my own journey.”

Interestingly, the two are not strangers; Messi famously posed for a charity calendar in 2007 with baby Yamal, a photo that gained traction during Euro 2024 as Spain secured the European Championship.

Additionally, there are childhood photos of Yamal and Messi together at Barça’s training ground, highlighting their connection from Yamal’s early days in the club’s academy while Messi was already a first-team star.

This match between Spain and Argentina occurs just months ahead of next summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with both teams predicted to be strong contenders when the tournament begins.
