Barcelona manager Hansi Flick reported that Lamine Yamal is making good progress in his recovery from a persistent groin issue, although he still experiences occasional pain.
The 18-year-old Yamal had missed seven matches for both club and country earlier this season due to pubalgia, but has recently participated in Barça’s last three games.
Despite his return, he has not yet recaptured the form he displayed last season, and struggled during last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to LaLiga leaders Real Madrid, raising concerns about his fitness level.
“Lamine is doing well,” Flick affirmed during a press conference ahead of the match against Elche this Sunday.
“I just spoke with him and he seems to be in a good place. While he does have some days with pain, he is putting in a lot of effort and is showing significant improvement.”
“I believe he is evolving positively, which is the key point here.”
In an effort to revitalize Yamal during the game against Madrid, he was repositioned to a more central role late on. However, Flick believes Yamal will regain his peak form more effectively by playing on the right wing.
“Currently, the best way for him to return to his top level is to play in his usual position, where he can utilize his strengths and contribute maximally to the team,” he explained.
“That said, there are times when playing in different areas, like inside in the half-space, is beneficial. He is adaptable and a talented player who can function in various roles.
“Ultimately, it’s crucial for him to be involved and touch the ball, as that is when he can create opportunities for us. That’s what we want to see.”

Barcelona’s reliance on Yamal has grown in light of injuries to other key players, including Robert Lewandowski, Dani Olmo, and Raphinha, all of whom missed last week’s Clásico loss, leaving Barça five points behind Madrid.
Marc-André ter Stegen, Joan García, Andreas Christensen, Gavi, and Pedri are also injured at the moment; however, Flick mentioned that there is “good news” regarding Lewandowski and Olmo, as both are likely to be available for the match against Elche at the Olympic Stadium this weekend.
“With Lewy and Dani, we will assess on Sunday how long they can play and how well they adapt, and based on that, we will decide on their participation in upcoming matches against Club Brugge and Celta Vigo,” Flick stated.
“Managing a team without all players available is challenging and affects how we can bring out the best in the other players.
“However, with Lewy and Dani back, the last two training sessions have been very positive. It’s not just about their individual improvement, but it also uplifts the overall quality and performance of the entire squad, including the younger players.”
