An ex-England international soccer player was detained at Stansted Airport on Sunday on allegations of attempting to rape a former partner.
ESPN has verified the identity of the individual, who remains unnamed due to legal restrictions.
According to Essex Police, the man has been released on bail until “late February 2026” while further investigations are conducted.
A representative from the police stated: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been bailed until a date in late February 2026 as our investigations continue.”
The individual was intercepted at a passport control area at Stansted, a detail first reported by The Sun Newspaper. The allegations were reportedly made by a former partner several weeks prior.
