SEATTLE — United States defender Alex Freeman experienced a “full-circle family moment” on Friday, netting a goal in the Americans’ 2-0 victory over Australia at Lumen Field, the same location where his father, Antonio Freeman, had an unforgettable game for the Green Bay Packers.
Freeman’s goal came in the 43rd minute when he was quick to react to a deflected shot from Sergiño Dest, heading the ball into the net for his third international goal. Although the goal was initially disallowed for offside, a VAR review determined it should stand, leading to a celebration with his teammates.
In the grand scheme, Freeman’s achievement overshadowed his father’s performance on September 29, 1996, when Antonio caught seven passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-10 Packers win over Seattle at the Kingdome.
This goal marked a significant milestone for Freeman, contributing to the U.S.’s second consecutive World Cup victory and securing a place in the round of 32. The match took place at Lumen Field, which opened in 2002 on the site of the former Kingdome, demolished in 2000.
“For me, it just illustrates how incredible our family legacy is,” Alex Freeman reflected post-game. “He has achieved greatness, and I can carve out my own path to greatness as well. It’s wonderful to have a father who has succeeded and can guide me to prepare for moments like this.”
The goal, initially called offside, was confirmed by VAR, marking Freeman’s first World Cup goal in his inaugural tournament, leading to spontaneous celebrations with his teammates. “At first, I was anxious when it went to VAR, but I’m thrilled to have contributed to the win,” he told Fox Sports. “When it was confirmed, I noticed all my teammates running towards me, and I thought, ‘I need to run away, they’re going to tackle me!’
“This moment was incredibly emotional for me because you dream of something like this, and having such a great support system to celebrate with makes it all the more special.”
U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino granted Freeman his international debut last year during the Gold Cup, following his impressive performances at the club level with Orlando City in MLS. After the match, Pochettino praised Freeman’s development, which recently led to a lucrative transfer to LaLiga’s Villarreal.
“The player is doing a fantastic job,” Pochettino remarked about Freeman. “His evolution has been remarkable. He is extremely humble, has an impressive profile, and shows a desire to learn. He is a joy to work with. I believe he has the potential to become one of the best players in his position globally.”
