Newport assistant manager Mark Smith has left the club.
Todd, who oversaw Newport’s pre-season friendlies against Bristol Manor Farm, Newport City, Gloucester City and Reading, is expected to stay with County.
Newport were four points from safety in League Two when Graham Fuchs replaced Dave Hughes last November. Fuchs kept the club up but departed on the eve of pre-season for the 2026-27 campaign. The arrival of Hayden Mullins now marks a third consecutive summer of managerial change at Rodney Parade. He is also the fourth permanent head coach appointed by owner Huw Jenkins since his January 2024 takeover, following Nelson Jardim, Hughes and Fuchs.
A former England Under-21 international, Mullins also played for Reading, Birmingham City and Notts County. He began coaching in Watford’s academy in 2016, led their under-23s, and twice served as caretaker of the first team after the departures of Quique Sánchez Flores and Nigel Pearson. He became Colchester United’s assistant in 2020, later stepping up as interim and then permanent manager in May 2021, before leaving the role within a year. In 2023 he briefly managed the Turks and Caicos Islands national team, then joined Fulham as under-21 head coach later that year, winning the Premier League Cup in his first season with a 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur’s under-21s.
Mullins said working with under-21s was rewarding but he missed the competitive edge of Saturdays at 3pm. He added that the opportunity to join Newport was an easy decision and that he is excited by the club’s plans for the future.
