Gabigol: Brazil must…

Newly acquired Santos player Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa is eager to assist Neymar in his quest for a spot on Brazil‘s World Cup roster.

At 29, Gabigol has recently rejoined Santos on loan from Cruzeiro for the remainder of the season, joining Neymar in the attacking line-up.

This week, Neymar extended his contract with Santos until the end of 2026.

He is determined to demonstrate to Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti that he is ready and fit for World Cup selection.

“It’s well known that Neymar is my idol and friend,” Gabigol remarked during his presentation.

“I’ve had the chance to play with him on the national team. We were very happy together. I want to help him get back to 100% because we need him for the World Cup and to assist Santos in their title chase.”

Neymar underwent minor surgery on his left knee on December 22, shortly after helping Santos dodge relegation.

He had suffered an ACL and meniscus tear in that knee in October 2023 while representing Brazil and has faced ongoing fitness challenges since then.

Even though Neymar has played in only half of Brazil’s Serie A matches since his return to Santos in January 2025, his eight goals in the league, including four in the final matches, were pivotal in securing the team’s top-flight status.

Gabigol and Neymar briefly played together at Santos early in their careers, and they were part of Brazil’s squads that clinched gold at the 2016 Olympics and were runners-up at the 2021 Copa America.
