Forget the concerns about Germany potentially missing the World Cup.
Germany secured its spot with a resounding 6-0 victory over Slovakia on Monday, bouncing back from a rough start to their qualifying campaign, showcasing the four-time champions’ continued prowess in World Cup qualifications.
“It was an outstanding performance from our team under a lot of pressure,” stated Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.
This marks Germany’s 21st appearance in the World Cup across 23 tournaments, having missed the inaugural edition in 1930 and being barred from the 1950 event.
The Netherlands, a historic rival, also secured a spot for next year’s tournament with a group-winning performance. The World Cup will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Dutch capped their unbeaten qualifying run with a 4-0 win over Lithuania, finishing ahead of Poland.
Slovakia and Poland, which placed second in their respective groups, will enter the playoffs.
Germany needed to avoid an upset against Slovakia at Red Bull Arena in Leipzig to claim the top spot in Group A and earn a World Cup qualification.
Despite losing to Slovakia two months prior, Germany quickly established dominance with Newcastle star Nick Woltemade scoring first in the 18th minute.
Serge Gnabry added a goal in the 29th minute, followed by two from Leroy Sané before halftime. Second-half goals from substitutes Ridle Baku and Assan Ouédraogo completed the rout against Slovakia.
“I believe we’re on the right path again,” Nagelsmann commented. “We can prepare without the stress of playoffs in March.”
Meanwhile, the Netherlands ensured their qualification with an early goal from Tijjani Reijnders in the 16th minute, followed by a penalty from Cody Gakpo in the 58th minute, and additional goals from Xavi Simons and Donyell Malen, securing Poland’s second-place finish in the group.
The UEFA playoff draw is scheduled for Thursday, featuring 16 teams competing for four World Cup spots in March 2026.
Mark your calendars for the World Cup draw on December 5.
