Mason Greenwood, the former Manchester United forward, has officially signed with Fenerbahçe, marking his third club move in three years.
In a statement released late Tuesday, Fenerbahçe announced they would pay Marseille €39 million (approximately $44.5 million) for the 24-year-old player, who has been offered a four-year contract.
Expressing his excitement, Greenwood stated, “It was a no-brainer when they showed interest in me,” in a video shared by his new club. “It’s the biggest club in Turkey, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Atlético Madrid ended their pursuit of Greenwood on Monday, indicating he was unresponsive, as reported by ESPN. Sources revealed that Greenwood did not respond for two days following Atlético’s initial proposal, which the club interpreted as a lack of respect and interest in joining them.
Although Atlético Madrid’s offer of €45 million (approximately $51.3 million) was more substantial, the terms presented were less favorable for Greenwood.
Fenerbahçe has not celebrated a Turkish league title since 2014, while their city rivals, Galatasaray, have secured seven titles during that time, including the last four consecutive seasons.
As the runners-up from the previous season, Fenerbahçe will kick off their Champions League campaign next week, starting with a home match against Gornik Zabrze in the first leg of the second qualifying round.
Greenwood previously spent two seasons at Marseille after a loan spell with Getafe, having been sidelined at Manchester United where he was once considered a rising star.
Manchester United suspended Greenwood in 2022 after he was accused of assaulting a young woman, following the dissemination of online images and videos. He faced charges of attempted rape and controlling behavior, which were eventually dropped.
The former England international found his rhythm again during his first year at Marseille, where the team finished as runners-up in Ligue 1.
His 21 league goals in the 2024-25 season were tied for the highest in Ligue 1, alongside Ousmane Dembélé of the champion team, Paris Saint-Germain.
Greenwood made one appearance for England back in 2020, although he has since been overlooked by both former coach Gareth Southgate and current coach Thomas Tuchel for further selections.
While he qualifies under FIFA regulations to represent Jamaica, there has been no evidence that Greenwood has initiated any request to switch his international allegiance.
