Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, believes it is premature to concern himself with the challenge of Arsenal, who are currently leading the Premier League.
On Sunday, City suffered a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa, while Arsenal secured a victory of the same margin against Crystal Palace, extending their lead to six points at the top of the table.
Historically, City has been successful in closing the gap on Arsenal during title races, notably during the 2023-24 season. However, Guardiola is not overly concerned at this juncture.
“Arsenal has shown solidity for several years. My worry is about how we can improve, continuously getting better and remaining competitive,” he commented post-match after experiencing a third consecutive loss at Villa Park.
“From my experience, the season is long—very long. There are many teams involved.”
“I felt anxious when we were 14th in the table before the international break in September.”
“If Arsenal wins all their games and clinches the Premier League, we will simply congratulate them. But I need to feel my team is alive and performing well. I don’t know how many teams can come here and play with the courage, possession, and chances we created.”
“We need to maintain stability and manage games more effectively. But I’m not dwelling on what might happen in October or November regarding the Premier League outcome; it’s about taking it one game at a time now.”
Villa celebrated Unai Emery’s three-year anniversary with a stylish performance, as Matty Cash’s first-half goal secured their fourth consecutive Premier League victory.
City struggled against Villa’s tactical approach, with Erling Haaland being denied a goal for only the second time this season, ending a 12-match scoring streak for both club and country.

Haaland thought he had equalized late in the match but his goal was disallowed due to offside after a collision with the post.
Guardiola remarked, “I didn’t speak to him after the match. He took a knock on the post. We’ve scored many goals this season, and while we need to improve, today was tough as they defended so well.”
“We were close, but in games we’ve won, our productivity has been lower.” Such a string of results against Guardiola’s team would have seemed unlikely for Villa prior to Emery’s arrival at Villa Park in October 2022, where he transformed their prospects.
After a slow start to the season, Villa now appears poised to challenge at the higher echelons of the Premier League.
“We began the season poorly and had doubts. We were not feeling good or confident for various reasons,” Emery stated.
“This week’s performance against Tottenham away and against Manchester City, showing such commitment and following the game plan, is fantastic.”
“With our players’ quality, we can feel assured and confident, allowing us to win matches like we did today. This performance gives us confidence and positive energy.
“We are progressively making this place our fortress. We need to raise our standards as high as possible. There’s still work ahead.”
