BOURNEMOUTH, England — Pep Guardiola’s tenure is set to conclude without a dramatic final chapter.
The Manchester City manager, seemingly poised to depart the Etihad Stadium at the season’s end, saw his team settle for a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on Tuesday, extinguishing any chance of catching Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.
This result allows Mikel Arteta’s squad to celebrate their first championship since 2004, with a game still to play.
A victory at the Vitality Stadium would have set the stage for a thrilling final day and kept Guardiola’s hopes of adding another trophy at bay.
With the title race now settled, City supporters will have the opportunity to honor their esteemed manager and bid farewell to key players Bernardo Silva and John Stones during Aston Villa’s visit on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Andoni Iraola will conclude his stint as Bournemouth’s manager after achieving the club’s first-ever European qualification in their 127-year history. The draw against City ensures a top-seven finish, securing a spot in next season’s Europa League.
Iraola has already announced his departure, while Guardiola continues to leave his future uncertain.
The City fans who traveled to the south coast made their presence felt, chanting “one more year, one more year, Guardiola” throughout the match.
Club management seems resigned to Guardiola’s potential summer exit, yet the 55-year-old has not made a definitive announcement.
In his post-match conference, he sidestepped questions about his future, stating the need to first discuss with City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.
“I could say that I have one more year on my contract,” said Guardiola, who is under contract until 2027, but has a break clause this summer.
“In my experience, announcing anything during the competition tends to yield bad outcomes. The first person I need to talk to is my chairman. I won’t reveal anything here because I must coordinate with my chairman, players, and staff. My sole focus right now is on our current competitions.”
Importantly, Guardiola indicated that talks with Khaldoon will occur before Aston Villa’s visit this Sunday, knowing fans will want to honor him after a decade filled with 20 trophies.
“We will have discussions in the coming days. It’s important that I talk with my chairman first,” he added.

Marcotti reacts to reports of Guardiola’s Man City exit
Gab Marcotti discusses Pep Guardiola’s anticipated departure from Manchester City and the possibility of Enzo Maresca stepping in as his successor.
If Guardiola does indeed leave, he will pass on a well-rounded squad. The Carabao Cup and FA Cup are already secured, and City has kept pace with Arsenal until the final stretch of the season.
Dropping points against Bournemouth is no embarrassment, especially as Iraola has led the team on an unbeaten streak since January, securing at least a spot in the Europa League. Champions League qualification remains a possibility as well, a remarkable feat considering the club was in the fourth tier just a decade ago.
Typically, Iraola would be an excellent candidate to replace Guardiola. However, Enzo Maresca has emerged as the top choice; he previously served as Guardiola’s assistant and gained valuable Premier League experience at Chelsea.
While following in Guardiola’s footsteps will be a daunting task, Maresca inherits a talented squad poised for a championship run. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is among the top targets to replace Silva, while Bournemouth’s Alex Scott‘s performance on Tuesday might also have made him an attractive option.
Regarding the outlook for next season, Guardiola stated, “Next season, we will be back,” quickly amending himself to say, “City will be back.”
“First, I want to congratulate Arsenal, Mikel, his staff, and the fans for their Premier League victory; it was well-deserved. For my managerial career, this has been one of the most challenging years, and we never gave up.”
If this indeed marks the conclusion of Guardiola’s era, he will depart as the greatest manager in City’s history, with six Premier League titles in ten years, firmly placing him among the all-time greats alongside Manchester United‘s legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
Though Guardiola couldn’t finish with one more title, he leaves behind the potential for City to reclaim the trophy from Arsenal as soon as possible.
