Ilkay Gündogan, the former captain of Manchester City, expressed that it will feel “weird” and emotional to play at the Etihad Stadium once again, this time on the opposing team.
Gündogan, who led City to a treble victory in 2023, returns to his old home with Galatasaray for an important Champions League match on Wednesday.
The experienced German midfielder joined Galatasaray last summer after a successful nine-year stint at City, where he made significant contributions to Pep Guardiola’s dominant squad.
“For me, this is a special and emotional game,” said the 35-year-old, who achieved five Premier League titles, a Champions League victory, and two FA Cups during his time with City.
“It’s going to be a bit strange going up against my former teammates and a coach with whom I share many memories and a close bond,” he continued. “Returning to this stadium after such extended success will be beautiful, and I can’t wait for it.”
Heading into their final league match, Galatasaray sits at the bottom of the table and needs a positive result to secure their playoff chances.
Keeping Erling Haaland under control will be crucial for the Turkish side’s success.
While the normally prolific striker has scored only once in his last nine matches, Gündogan understands the danger he poses.
He remarked: “Never underestimate him. He’s a goal machine and possesses the capability to score as many goals as he desires in any match or season. It’s nearly impossible to contain him for a full 90 minutes, but it’s vital for us to not only defend against him but to work collectively as a team to minimize his chances of scoring. This is one of the keys to achieving a favorable result.”
Gündogan has been closely monitoring City, who are currently four points behind Arsenal in the Premier League standings. He believes they can overcome the Gunners.
“Of course, I’m keeping an eye on them. I’m still a fan of this club, this team, and this manager. I try to watch as many games as possible,” he stated. “I still believe they can catch Arsenal. Once this City team finds its momentum, they can embark on an unbeaten streak.”
