Haji Wrights Hat Trick…

Haji Wright scored a stunning hat trick, leading Coventry to a decisive 3-1 victory at home against promotion rivals Middlesbrough, reclaiming the top spot in the Sky Bet Championship.

Having seen a 10-point lead on the table evaporate, Coventry displayed dominance at the Coventry Building Society Arena, allowing Frank Lampard’s side to ascend back to the summit and inch closer to the Premier League.

After a tough stretch of three games without a win, the Sky Blues reignited their title challenge and halted Middlesbrough’s six-game winning streak.

With his hat trick, Wright reached a total of 13 goals for the season, earning praise from his coach, Frank Lampard.

“Haji remains focused and has been working diligently. We know what he’s capable of when he’s in that form. I’m thrilled for him, and he needs to carry this forward,” said Lampard.

“In high-stakes games, it’s crucial to score at key moments, and we did that today. The entire team worked hard, and Haji delivered.”

Wright made a near miss early on, hitting the post, but he quickly redeemed himself with a tap-in for his third goal since October, easing any anxiety among the home crowd.

Middlesbrough struggled offensively and didn’t register a shot on target throughout the first half.

Wright added a second goal for the hosts just ten minutes into the second half, followed by Riley McGree‘s strike that briefly brought Boro back into the match. However, Wright completed his hat trick from the penalty spot after Matt Targett was penalized for handling the ball in the box.

Coventry began the match quickly, with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto delivering a cross that found Wright, who headed it against the post.

Boro players thwarted further attempts from Frank Onyeka and Jack Rudoni, but the visitors eventually settled in, with Morgan Whittaker shooting over their first chance of the match after a frantic opening.

Coventry took the lead in the 21st minute when Rudoni skillfully carried the ball into the area and delivered a precise cross, allowing Wright to poke it past Sol Brynn.

Subsequent attempts for a second goal came from Ephron Mason-Clark, who aimed for the far post but missed narrowly.

After a slow start, the Teesiders finally began to put pressure on Coventry around the 40-minute mark. Targett sent a delivery that Whittaker headed just wide.

Opportunities arose at both ends, with Mason-Clark breaking the offside trap, only to have his shot saved by Brynn just before halftime.

Twenty seconds later, Hayden Hackney prompted Carl Rushworth into his first save. Then, Rushworth launched a long kick that Wright latched onto, finishing past Brynn for his second goal.

Despite appearing in control, Coventry was reminded of Middlesbrough’s potential as Aidan Morris struck the post from long range.

Middlesbrough managed to get a goal back when Callum Brittain’s cross found McGree, who scored, making for a tense conclusion.

However, any nerves were quelled when Josh Eccles’ cross hit Targett’s hand, leading to a penalty for Wright, who successfully sealed his hat trick and secured the victory.

“There’s a lot to fight for. We’ve put ourselves in a promising position, and now it’s game on,” Lampard noted. “There’s much left to play for, and we can’t let ourselves get complacent. We must stay focused on our efforts, delivering on our game plan, as we face a different challenge against West Brom next.”
