England head coach Thomas Tuchel says he wants to carry on Gareth Southgate’s work of strengthening the bond between supporters and the team after years of disappointing tournaments.
Under Southgate, England reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024, with fans rallying behind the side.
Kane is one of three players still in the squad from 2018, alongside goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and defender John Stones.
The 32-year-old, whose two goals against Croatia drew him level with Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup strikes, says he is enjoying the “freshness” of Tuchel’s squad.
Kane said this tournament feels different, with his and other veterans’ roles shifting as the more experienced, older players.
He spoke of a fresh energy, with clear hunger, desire and excitement among the group to be part of what could be a special summer.
He added that the togetherness is obvious around camp and in training, where the intensity is high and places are fiercely contested without any animosity.
The mindset, he said, is to compete for spots, accept whoever starts, and be ready to come on and make an impact when called upon.
England’s next Group L match is against Ghana in Boston on Tuesday at 21:00 BST.
