The frustration was that Rashford’s comeback coincided with what Maguire admitted was Manchester United’s poorest pre-season display, just a week before their Premier League opener at Hull.
Captain Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty for the second match in a row, which would have made it 2-1 at the break, though there were promising signs in his understanding with Youri Tielemans as both completed 90 minutes for the first time.
Maguire said the team want to play higher up the pitch, press more aggressively and stay on the front foot.
He felt this was the only game where they didn’t do themselves justice in that approach. Although they made plenty of high regains and created chances from them, they failed to sustain the pressure for long enough.
Across a five-week, six-game pre-season, Maguire wore the armband early on when Fernandes was unavailable, hinting he could be vice-captain this season, though that is yet to be confirmed.
He also offered warm praise for former manager Ruben Amorim.
Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, who both had disagreements with Amorim, were on the far side acknowledging fans when the Portuguese coach spotted some of his ex-players as they left the field after the presentation.
