MANCHESTER, England — Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson might be joining Manchester City next season.
If they find themselves at the City Football Academy this summer, they may want to keep a low profile for a couple of days. The Nottingham Forest duo played a crucial role in securing a surprising 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, significantly damaging the title aspirations of their potential new teammates.
In conjunction with Arsenal‘s 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, the gap at the top has widened to seven points. Gibbs-White and Anderson, both targets for City ahead of the upcoming transfer window, are unlikely to be concerned.

Meanwhile, Forest is struggling at the opposite end of the table, and securing a point is vital in keeping them above the relegation zone. Had they fallen short, they would have found themselves in the bottom three due to West Ham United‘s 1-0 victory over Fulham.
The match drew contrasting reactions from the two managers, Pep Guardiola and Vitor Pereira.
“Sometimes I talk, sometimes I don’t,” Guardiola said in a concise post-match conference. “Today, there’s no need. Tomorrow we’ll see.”
Pereira, on the other hand, was visibly joyful after earning his first Premier League point since taking over from Sean Dyche. “It was a challenging match, but my team showcased a lot of character,” he stated. “We demonstrated quality and organization, despite having one less day to recover than City.”
“I’m proud of my players. Those were extraordinary goals. We showed ourselves that we can earn points anywhere.”
Even with their recent successes, City’s struggles have felt inevitable. This isn’t a Guardiola squad accustomed to overwhelming opponents. Their earlier match against Forest at the City Ground in December ended with a 2-1 win for City, and their last two victories over Newcastle United and Leeds United were determined by single goals as well.
Almost 40% of their Premier League wins this season have been by a one-goal margin, the highest such proportion since the 2012-13 campaign when they surpassed 50%.
With margins so tight, it’s challenging to consistently secure victories, and against Forest, City faltered. They initially took the lead through Antoine Semenyo, only to be equalized by a brilliant moment of improvisation from Gibbs-White.
Ola Aina delivered a deep cross, which Igor Jesus headed back inside. With limited options and Rúben Dias closely marking him, Gibbs-White finished with an inventive back-heel past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“He’s a special talent,” said Pereira.
“He possesses remarkable quality, knows how to find space, and scored a stunning goal. He embodies the fighting spirit that I want in my team.”
As Anderson made his statement, Gibbs-White wasn’t to be overshadowed. After Rodri scored to make it 2-1 with a header from a corner by Rayan Aït-Nouri, the England midfielder combined effectively with Callum Hudson-Odoi before curling his finish beautifully into the corner.
This ensured Forest avoided losing in league matches at City for the first time in nearly three decades.
“I was initially wary of leaving Elliot on the pitch beyond 60 or 70 minutes due to concerns about his stamina,” Pereira admitted.
“But to my surprise, he maintained immense energy and quality right to the end.”
Anderson also played a significant role in Forest’s resolute defense, which managed to thwart City’s late attempts at clinching victory. City appealed for two penalties—one for a challenge by Matz Sels on Erling Haaland, and another for Anderson’s challenge on Rodri—but neither was granted.
Savinho had a prime opportunity at the game’s close, yet his shot was cleared off the line by Murillo. When asked what his team could improve, Guardiola candidly stated, “Score goals.”
Guardiola’s concerns grow knowing that City has now allowed 13 points to slip from winning positions this season. Since the year began, they’ve led against Chelsea, Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Forest, but managed to gather only four points out of a possible 12.
With a game in hand and Arsenal set to visit the Etihad in April, Guardiola is holding onto hope.
“We still have nine matches to go—one fewer for them [Arsenal] now, and our focus shifts to Newcastle [this Saturday],” he noted. “I always concentrate on what’s next, not on the past.”
“We review our performance overall, and while there are many positive aspects, it’s clear we have areas to improve.”
As the summer transfer window approaches, City could see improvements through the arrivals of Gibbs-White and Anderson. Currently, as players representing Forest, they’ve not only hindered City’s title ambitions but also bolstered their own chances of staying in the Premier League.
