Højlund: Emotional…

Rasmus Højlund has expressed that his unconventional farewell to Manchester United was deeply emotional, following the confirmation of his permanent transfer to Napoli on Sunday.

Napoli secured a 3-0 victory over Pisa, ensuring their qualification for next year’s Champions League. According to ESPN, this victory will trigger a €44 million (£38.4m) obligation to finalize his move.

Initially, Højlund joined the Serie A side on loan from Manchester United at the end of last summer’s transfer window.

After the match, Højlund shared a celebratory photo on Instagram, reflecting on his permanent transfer to Italy.

“This goal felt symbolic because it represents two significant milestones. Firstly, we secured Champions League qualification with Napoli, which means, due to my contract, I am now officially a Napoli player, and it signifies my farewell to Manchester United,” he stated in his Instagram post.

“It feels strange because, for the past year, I’ve felt like a Napoli player. The support from the fans made me feel at home and helped me regain my confidence, for which I am very grateful.

“Saying goodbye to Manchester United is also emotional. I have lived my childhood dream by playing at Old Trafford in a red jersey.

“This goal symbolizes a fresh beginning, and I commit to giving my all for Napoli while expressing my gratitude to the fans, players, and staff at Manchester United for making my childhood dream a reality. Now, it’s time for new aspirations, and I’m ready to pursue them.”

Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, mentioned last year that making his transfer permanent was merely a “formality.”

The 23-year-old forward joined Old Trafford in 2023, netting 14 Premier League goals over two seasons.

This season, he has scored 11 goals for Napoli, with one match remaining in the Italian league.
