How the World Cup Could…

Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka’s fitness has been a constant talking point during this World Cup.

Both are as vital for their country as they are for their club, and each has pushed through physically demanding spells.

Rice has been managing a hamstring issue and received an injection late last year to help with it.

The 27-year-old also fell ill during the World Cup and was taken off at half-time in England’s 2-1 quarter-final win over Norway.

Arsenal played 63 matches across all competitions last season, reaching the Champions League final and winning the league title.

Rice appeared in 55 of those fixtures and, along with his Arsenal teammates, reported to the England camp later after taking a brief rest.

It will now be decided how long a break Rice requires before returning to pre-season with the Arsenal squad.

The midfielder is entitled to a mandatory 21-day holiday once the World Cup concludes.

Saka is in a comparable position to Rice, with rest offering the greatest benefit for the issue he’s managing.

The winger has been carrying an Achilles problem since March and admitted that playing in the tournament was a “gamble”.

England manager Thomas Tuchel said the winger is now “pain-free”. However, he has still managed Saka’s minutes, and the player did not come off the bench as England lost to Argentina in the semi-finals.

Beyond the Achilles issue last season, Saka also missed games with a hamstring injury, and he’ll hope a proper break now helps him return to peak fitness.
