Hull City has achieved promotion to the Premier League following a thrilling 1-0 victory against Middlesbrough in the Championship playoff final held at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
Oli McBurnie clinched the win with a dramatic goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time, propelling Hull into the top flight along with Coventry City and Ipswich Town.
The final unfolded amidst the ongoing “Spygate” controversy that has enveloped English football since the playoff semifinals. Southampton, who defeated Middlesbrough in the semifinals, were expelled from the final by the English Football League due to illegal spying on their rivals.
Having only learned of their final opponents shortly before the match, Hull managed to secure a victory over Boro.
Despite the sweltering heat at Wembley, McBurnie was able to strike when a cross was mishandled by Boro goalkeeper Sol Brynn.
Hull became the first team since Cardiff in 2010 to finish sixth in the Championship and go on to win the playoffs, managing to secure victories in both the semifinals and final without conceding a single goal.

Prior to the match, Hull owner Acun Ilicali had indicated a potential legal course of action if his team lost, as the Spygate turmoil continued.
“Our legal team has advised us to pursue action, that’s for certain,” Ilicali told BBC Radio Humberside.
“We are determined to seek justice. If fairness is compromised, then the enjoyment of football is at stake.”
Post-match, McBurnie reflected on the game saying: “This game represents who we are. We understood we wouldn’t dominate possession. We anticipated that we would be challenged. We knew we would get one chance. It was meant to be my moment.”
Regarding his pivotal goal, he stated: “I just aimed to make solid contact with the ball. It came to me in a flash. It all happened so quickly.”
Wolves and Burnley have already been confirmed as relegated from the Premier League. The third relegated team will be determined on Sunday in a match between West Ham and Tottenham.
This season marked the final year with only four teams competing in the playoffs, as the format is set to expand to six teams next season.
