WASHINGTON, D.C. — Jesse Marsch has expressed his desire for Italy to win their UEFA playoff, setting up a matchup against Canada at the World Cup. He also informed Wales coach Craig Bellamy that he is prepared to reignite their rivalry should the Red Dragons seize the final spot in Group B.
As co-hosts, Canada is in a group with Switzerland, Qatar, and the winner of the upcoming UEFA playoff featuring Italy, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Bosnia & Herzegovina, set to take place next March.
Former Leeds United coach Marsch believes that facing Italy would make for an exciting opening game for Canada, especially due to the large Italian community in the country.
Following a previous exchange with Bellamy, where the Wales manager criticized Canada’s celebrations after a 1-0 friendly win in Swansea and remarked, “I hope I see you again at the World Cup,” Marsch affirmed his readiness to compete against Wales if they make it through the playoffs.
"Bellamy indicated he wanted to face us, and Wales is in the mix," Marsch shared with reporters. "Bosnia is a strong team, and Northern Ireland will present a challenge too. It's a competitive group, and while many expect Italy to advance, it won’t be straightforward for them."
Marsch added, "Playing against Italy would be fantastic. For our first match at home, I anticipate a vibrant crowd, especially with a significant number of Italian-Canadians in attendance, and they better cheer for Canada!"
"Having lived in Italy, I recognize their team is formidable. [Gennaro] Gattuso has done well to make them competitive recently, which would pose a significant challenge for us and create an unforgettable experience during a home World Cup having Canada face Italy."
Regarding the selection of their opponents, Marsch expressed, "The second pot has various playoff contenders, and while I didn't want to draw another European team, I guess I’ll just have to wait." He acknowledged the discomfort of not knowing who their third opponent will be but expressed overall excitement about the group.
Marsch noted that avoiding Norway, the toughest team in Pot Three, was a significant relief. "I’m glad we didn't draw Norway," he said. "We have confidence in our squad and feel we can compete with anyone we face."
"Switzerland is a highly talented and well-coached team, making for a substantial challenge, but we believe we can hold our ground against them. We must focus on our preparation, ensuring the team stays healthy and fit to perform at their best."
