I could see another change at left-back, with Nico O’Reilly coming in for Djed Spence.
Without O’Reilly, we lacked creativity and quality down the left, and we actually looked more dangerous in the 15 minutes after he came on than for the rest of the match.
He found excellent positions, offered more on the ball, and was unlucky when his header struck the bar.
I’d also understand Tuchel restoring John Stones in place of Ezri Konsa. Even though our main issue against Ghana was breaking them down, there were still defensive concerns.
On Ghana’s two genuine attacks, one could easily have led to a penalty and the other might have ended with Jordan Pickford being sent off.
We got away with both, but with Tuchel tweaking the defence, there’s clearly some uncertainty at the back.
I’m not sure if that has affected Pickford as well, but he hasn’t looked as assured as he usually does.
In the first game his distribution was poor, and against Ghana he was caught out when he rushed off his line, so perhaps those changes haven’t helped him either.
