London City Lionesses captain Kosovare Asllani is poised to sign a one-year extension despite sustaining a serious knee injury.
In March, the club revealed the Sweden international had suffered a “complex multi-ligament injury,” including a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
At 36, she faces a race to be fit for next season, with her existing deal set to expire this summer.
However, it is understood London City have offered Asllani a one-year contract to support her long-term rehabilitation, even though she is unlikely to play for the club again.
With the Women’s World Cup scheduled for Brazil next year, Sweden’s captain—capped more than 200 times—hopes to regain fitness in time to compete.
Asllani was instrumental in London City’s WSL 2 title in 2024-25, then contributed two goals and three assists across 19 top-flight appearances last season.
A firm fan favourite, she has been a pivotal figure throughout her two seasons with the club.
Meanwhile, midfielder Malou Marcetto—who tore multiple knee ligaments in the final WSL match of the season—has reportedly made encouraging early progress following surgery.
London City, owned by US billionaire Michele Kang, operates independently and has no affiliation with a men’s team.
They finished sixth in their inaugural Women’s Super League campaign in 2025-26 and aim to push for a Champions League berth next season.
Kang has previously spoken about investing in the women’s game and enhancing medical support—reflected in Asllani’s short-term extension.
Eder Maestre’s squad has also been strengthened by the headline arrival of two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, who left Barcelona for London City this month.
Further recruits include Spain centre-back Mapi Leon, former England goalkeeper Mary Earps, Denmark defender Janni Thomsen and Germany forward Nicole Anyomi.
It is also believed the club plans to add another attacking option, alongside further reinforcements.
