The 2026 World Cup may mark the end of an era for some football legends, but it will also be recognized as the occasion when emerging generational talents made their mark on the global stage.
Many might have heard of Yan Diomande before witnessing him play an entire match. Clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool are rumored to be interested, with whispers suggesting he is leaning towards PSG. Meanwhile, the 19-year-old Diomande continues to make waves on the field, skillfully outmaneuvering defenders while capturing the attention and admiration of spectators.
After debuting in professional football just 15 months ago, Diomande has quickly emerged as one of the standout stars of the recent season. His close friend and former roommate, James Eliuda, who attended the DME Academy in Daytona Beach with him, has long recognized the talent of the player they affectionately call “Dio.”

Diomande was among a group of African players recommended to the DME Academy. “When we received footage of him from the under-17 AFCON, it was clear right away that he was someone special,” recalls Todd Eason, who served as the director of soccer at DME from 2021 to 2024.
Diomande joined the academy in mid-September 2022, arriving from his home in the Ivory Coast. By then, Eliuda had been settled for a week and was there to assist his friend upon arrival.
Language barriers posed an initial challenge; Diomande spoke French while Eliuda was fluent in Arabic. “I understood a bit of English but was too shy to speak it, and he picked up only a few words,” Eliuda explains. They resorted to simple gestures and miming to communicate preferences, like indicating hunger or asking each other how they were feeling. Diomande even used gestures to ask Eliuda to take a photo to reassure his mother of his safe arrival.”
Immediately after settling in, students from Puerto Rico knocked at their door, inviting them out for a game. Eliuda assumed Diomande would prefer rest after his long journey, but he insisted on joining the game.
“I thought he’d be tired, but as soon as he got the ball, he showcased a level of skill I had never seen before,” Eliuda recounts, describing Diomande juggling the ball on his shoulders and performing impressive tricks.
The pair utilized the language app Duolingo to learn English during their studies and football practices. As a central midfielder, Eliuda often had Diomande sprinting down the wings beside him. Their training sessions, intense at times, occasionally led to competitive exchanges. “When tensions flared in practice, Diomande would handle the ball and weave through everyone effortlessly, leaving defenders behind,” Eliuda recalls.
With a translator initially assisting, Diomande quickly assumed the responsibility of translating training instructions from Eason into French for two Senegalese players. “It highlighted his intelligence; he grasped the game’s concepts without needing a shared language,” Eason adds.
Despite being a bit anxious at first and grappling with homesickness, Diomande adapted to the different food and cultural norms. Yet, he built a strong bond with his peers at DME.
Eason recalls Diomande’s loyalty: “When some Senegalese teammates teased James, he took it upon himself to defend him. It showcased how protective he was of his friends and his sense of fairness.”
The DME Academy team faced off against various clubs; however, their first match was memorable for other reasons.
“In one game against another academy, Diomande elbowed an opponent during a set piece. The opposing player was fouling him, so in frustration, he retaliated and received a red card. He apologized to the team afterward, admitting he hadn’t fully adapted yet,” Eason described. “In subsequent matches, however, he learned quickly and adjusted his approach to challenges.”
Soon enough, Diomande found his rhythm. “Every time I fielded him in matches, it felt like he was dominating effortlessly,” Eason mentions. In February, during MLS preseason in Florida, Diomande trained with the Colorado Rapids’ second team but quickly proved too skilled. He then joined their senior team in Orlando with adjustments made to accommodate his school schedule.
A coach contacted Eason, reporting that Diomande had outclassed their senior captain, Keegan Rosenberry. The ongoing challenge was finding competitive opportunities that would challenge him. Eason reached out to a team in Orlando for further development.
He directed them to local United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) side Frenzi, which had connections to DME Academy. “We’ve had impressive players like Diomande and James,” recalls Tyler Weston, then Frenzi’s coach. “After speaking with Todd, I thought, ‘This player could really develop with us.’ When we witnessed him play, we realized we had something special. Diomande quickly distinguished himself.”
The question arose regarding his position; Weston favored a 3-5-2 formation. “I decided to place him as a wingback, a position he had never played. But he confidently responded, ‘Coach, I can play anywhere you need me.'” His enthusiasm and adaptability impressed everyone.
“It may seem strange now, but his stamina was incredible as a wingback, and he fully embraced our team’s philosophy that success is defined by the chances we create for our players.”
MLS scouts were noticing Diomande’s talent, with Eason and his agent fielding inquiries from multiple teams. Despite the attention, Diomande remained grounded, waking early for practice and juggling in hotel parking lots during away games. Despite facing challenges from seasoned opponents, he maintained composure and adapted when faced with opposition.
In 2023, Weston fielded a competitive squad with players like Adrian Biaggi (Puerto Rico international), Charles Ahl (Pittsburgh Riverhounds), and Aidan Godinho (drafted by Montreal Impact). Yet, Diomande shone as the standout player.
As Frenzi’s season progressed, MLS interest enveloped Diomande. While a few trials emerged midseason, Weston emphasized that their team’s focus remained strong until the season’s conclusion. Diomande expressed his desire to finish strong with his teammates.
A highlight included a match against Legacy, where despite fatigue hitting other players, Diomande sprinted fiercely up and down the pitch even in the final minutes of overtime. His endurance was remarkable.

Klinsmann: Ivory Coast’s Yan Diomande a ‘very special player’
Frenzi reached the UPSL final against Sporting Wichita. Diomande scored the opener and later secured victory in extra time. His remarkable goal, noted for precision and composure, led him to clinch the golden boot and deliver Frenzi’s first UPSL title.
“He surpassed the level of MLS and became one of the greatest players in UPSL history,” Weston reflected. “Every time you watched him, it was simply awe-inspiring.”
As his star rose, interest expanded beyond a domestic reach. He trained with teams like Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, and Rangers. “As a young player, I was simply thrilled to see stars like [Michael] Olise and [Eberechi] Eze,” Diomande remarked in May. However, he opted against starting in the MLS, ultimately signing with Leganes in late 2024 and joining in January 2025.
“Not many know, but Leganes’ owner is involved in a Houston-based investment group called Blue Crow, which has recently acquired a USL club. He had funding from a group identifying talents in Africa but later shifted focus, bringing Diomande and another player to Leganes,” he explained.
Diomande debuted for Leganes against Real Madrid on March 29, 2025, scoring his first goal against Espanyol on May 11. After accumulating 542 minutes in La Liga, RB Leipzig activated his €20 million release clause that summer, making the move to the Bundesliga. A year later, he participated in the African Cup of Nations and earned the Rookie of the Season title in a campaign that saw him net 13 goals and provide 10 assists for Leipzig. Now, Liverpool—the club his father supports—and PSG are circling.
“I watched him play against Olise, and I thought he finally met his match. But then he faced him again and excelled,” Eason shared. “His ability to adapt and enhance his game, combined with his physical prowess and technical skills, indicate to me that he hasn’t even reached his potential yet.”
Whatever decision he makes regarding next season, whether to transition to a top European club or stay with RB Leipzig, Diomande prioritizes his growth and family ties. Since his arrival in Florida in September 2022, where he first sent a photo back to assure his mother of his safety, the focus has always been on family. “He cherishes his family deeply,” Eliuda shares. “His sister, Roxane, was a significant part of his life, and her passing has been hard for him. He constantly communicates with his family and seeks to be near them.”
“Being in his presence is motivating. His play and demeanor inspire you. You can trust he’ll always deliver when it counts,” Eliuda says.
On Tuesday, Ivory Coast faces Norway, with Diomande poised to take the left wing. All eyes will be on him and Erling Haaland, but Diomande will remain focused.
Spectators across the U.S. will take pride in witnessing the player they affectionately call Dio. “He possesses remarkable discipline and consistently makes informed choices that foster his development,” Eliuda notes. “Having represented my national teams at various levels, I’ve never encountered anyone quite like Dio. He’s truly the best teammate I’ve ever had, and I’ve had the privilege to watch him at work.”
