Newly promoted Ipswich Town have signed Portuguese defensive midfielder Florentino Luis from Burnley for an undisclosed fee.
The 26-year-old, who featured in 31 league matches during Burnley’s relegation campaign last season, has agreed a five-year deal at Portman Road. Hull City, also new to the Premier League, had been interested in the player.
Florentino said he was delighted to join, praising the club’s vision and the quality of the squad. He believes he can add experience, provide balance between defence and attack, and help link play.
Manager Gary O’Neil said Florentino brings Premier League know-how and experience in major European competitions, including the Champions League, and will strengthen Ipswich’s options in central midfield.
Florentino’s loan move from Benfica to Burnley became permanent in June due to an obligation to buy, reportedly worth £20.8m. He made his Clarets debut against Liverpool last September and quickly became an important player under former boss Scott Parker, despite the team’s relegation.
He won Portugal’s Primeira Liga with Benfica in 2019 and 2023—playing alongside Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez—and lifted the Portuguese League Cup in 2025. Internationally, he has represented Portugal from Under-15 through Under-21 level.
