James signs new six

Reece James has committed to a new six-year deal with Chelsea, ensuring his presence at Stamford Bridge until 2032, as announced by the club.

At 26 years of age, James has been with Chelsea since he was six and took on the role of club captain in 2023.

His former contract was set to end in 2028, but Chelsea has moved swiftly to secure his future and prevent a repeat of the free transfers seen with Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen, who both left for Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.

With 225 appearances under his belt for Chelsea, James was instrumental in the team’s triumph in the 2021 Champions League and last summer’s Club World Cup.

James first turned professional in March 2017, during which he was named the Academy Player of the Season and helped secure the Youth FA Cup.

His only loan experience came at Wigan, where he excelled primarily in midfield and earned the title of Player of the Season.

Since returning to Cobham for the 2019/20 season, James has been a vital part of Chelsea’s setup, overcoming injuries to become a standout performer for both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, playing mainly as a right back and occasionally in midfield.

After signing his new contract, James expressed his joy on Chelsea’s official website, saying, “I am over the moon to have extended my contract—Chelsea means so much to me.”

“I have always stated my desire to spend my prime years here, and I firmly believe we have everything we need to build upon our past successes,” James added.

“I’m looking forward to what lies ahead under this ownership, the sporting directors, the coach, and the entire staff, and I hope we can lift many more trophies together in the upcoming years.”

Sporting Directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart commented, “On behalf of the ownership and everyone associated with Chelsea, it is a proud moment for us all to see Reece extend his contract.

“He is a leader on and off the pitch. Reece understands the significance of this badge, and with his long-term commitment to Chelsea, we eagerly anticipate continuing this journey and striving for further success together.”
